Welcome to the Center Neighborhood! sticky icon

The Center Neighborhood of Portland, Oregon is located in the central heart of Portland's historic inner eastside, right in the very geographic center of the City and its residential neighborhoods.

Center is bounded on the west by 44th Avenue and the Laurelhurst neighborhood. On the east by 68th and 69th Avenues and the Montavilla neighborhood. The southern edge of Center is Burnside Street (separating it from the Mt. Tabor neighborhood), except in the area between 44th and 49th Avenues where the neighborhood extends south to Stark Street, which forms the boundary with the Sunnyside neighborhood. The Banfield Expressway (Interstate 84) forms its northern boundary, separating it from the Hollywood District, Rose City Park, and Madison South neighborhoods to the north.

Center Neighborhood is home to:

North Tabor As A Name

Our neighborhood was formed by geologic activity from Mount Tabor. We are on the slope of a dormant volcano. The Laurelhurst Neighborhood was also more than likely shaped by volcanic activity from Tabor. This history happened way before neighborhoods were platted.

North Tabor would be a fine name for the NE 60th & Glisan MAX station.

Here's a digital area map for the neighborhood. I'm working on plotting the local businesses on here that Jake dug up, and which are stored in the CiviCRM database right now.

Currently, I have running code to retrieve the various types of business as individual groups (e.g. restaurants, bars, bookstores, etc.) and store each organization's key details to disk in .kml files. I've implemented a simple caching system, to buffer the database back-end against repeated enquiries; reading in a .kml file for plotting is at least a hundred times faster.

Please Pardon Our Dust!

You are looking at the engine (and wheels and suspension and chassis; but not the bodywork, seats, and air-conditioning) for the next-generation Center Neighborhood web site.

It''s very much a work-in-progress at the moment, but our new Communications Committee is making diligent efforts to get a shiny new vehicle on the road very shortly...
[ok, block that metaphor!]
